WELCOME

Welcome

TO THE SAWLES ARMS CARTHEW, PL26 8XH

A traditional cosy country pub in the heart of the Clay Trails, a network of short walking, cycling and horseriding  trails through mid-Cornwall’s China Clay Country.

Open fire, dog friendly, and a guaranteed warm welcome from Landlady Carole Williams and her team. Come and share the fun and banter with the locals in a “real pub”.

We have a large sunny secluded and sheltered beer garden, safe for the children to play, and we are family friendly. On site off road parking is available in our car park.

We offer traditional pub food including vegetarian options and a children’s menu with ingredients locally sourced.

As a St Austell Brewery “house” we currently offer “Tribute” & “Cornish” beers in draught as well as Cornish lager “Korev”. Other St Austell Brewery beers are available by the bottle.

We are very close (4.4 miles) from the  Eden Project and literally just minutes away from Wheal Martyn, the museum dedicated to the China Clay industry.

We hope to see you soon

Carole & the team!

“The Sawles Arms is located  at  Carthew, about 3 miles north from the historic market town of St Austell and therefore also close to the stunning coastal towns and villages in St Austell Bay."

About Us

EXPLORE THE AREA & REFRESH WITH US

We are a traditional country pub loved by visitors and locals alike. We have a pool table in a separate room, darts and are actively involved in the local Euchre leagues.

We have an annual garden party in aid of the local hospice and regular quizzes for charity as well as books on sale for your holiday reading at only 25p which again all goes to charity.

The Sawles Arms is located  at  Carthew, about 3 miles north from the historic market town of St Austell and therefore also close to the stunning coastal towns and villages in St Austell Bay. Visit the lovely port of Charlestown (one of the film locations for Poldark), and Fowey, pronounced Foy like joy!

Visit the Lost Gardens of Heligan and combine this with a visit to the little fishing port of Mevagissey then maybe take the ferry across the bay to Fowey.

We have already mentioned our close proximity to the Eden Project and Wheal Martyn museum. When visiting these attractions  (before or after!) why not pop in to the Sawles Arms for some refreshment and home cooked food?

We do not offer accommodation but we can recommend a nice B&B just down the road (within walking distance of The Sawles Arms) as follows:-

Our Food

 LOCALLY SOURCED, FRESHLY PREPARED

At the Sawles Arms we are passionate about using fresh local produce.

Wherever available all of our suppliers are in Cornwall.

Our menu is based on the classics - from crispy Cod and chips, hand-carved ham and egg to a real old favourite - liver, bacon and onions.  We feature our selected steak of the week with all the trimmings or why not try our tender lamb shank with seasonal vegetables.

There is always more to find on our Specials board featuring our seasonal favourites and we offer a children’s menu with locally sourced ingredients featuring throughout.

Don't’ miss our traditional Sunday roast served with Yorkshires, gravy and seasonal vegetables.    For the real meat lovers we offer a mixed plate too.

Our kitchen is open everyday, due to current COVID restrictions we are offering a limited menu, available 12 - 5 pm.
